Is Online Banking Really Safe? - One of the major things to come out of the internet in the past few years has been online banking. The drudgery of having to stand shoulder to shoulder with people in your local branch for ages, wasting huge chunks of your lunch hour in the process, can be a thing of the past if you use online banking on a regular basis.

But while many of us have embraced the idea of going online to pay bills, shift money around and generally keep in touch with our finances, there is a dedicated band of people who are still viewing this modern phenomenon with suspicion. “How secure is it?” they ask. Is it really safe to access all your personal banking information via your home computer?

There have been stories of people’s accounts being breached as a result of trying online banking, but there have arguably been a far greater number of internet security breaches regarding the use of credit and debit cards for paying for goods through various websites on the internet.

Online banking is certainly an extremely useful tool to have at your disposal. It makes banking easy and the banks know that if they can offer a comprehensive online service they will grab more customers because of it.

That’s why the banks put in extensive network security measures to ensure their websites are as safe as they can possibly be. It’s in their best interests to do so because if they didn’t and customers’ accounts were breached, they would lose a lot of business as a result. It is sometimes said that even negative publicity can boost a business – but not in this case.

But of course it isn’t just down to the banks to keep their sites secure. In those few cases where a customer’s account has been hacked into or vital data has been discovered and stolen, it is often because of a lack of security on the part of the customer rather than the bank. If you use online banking services on a regular basis you should always ensure that your computer is well protected so that you have the best security possible.

Most of this is simple stuff but it is surprising how many people go online without adequate protection. You should have a firewall set up, an anti-virus software program and an anti-spyware program as well, to combat any threats which may come your way. These can be bought from any good computer store and they are generally very easy to install. Once you have done so your computer will be protected 24-7.

But your online security efforts shouldn’t stop there. Don’t forget the simple stuff either, such as ensuring your log in details and password are always kept secure. Do not tell anyone else what they are and don’t write them down anywhere. If you can’t remember them and you need to write them down, at least disguise them in some way. The more you can do to protect yourself when it comes to online banking, the less likely it is that you will become a victim of online fraud.
