You can check your website with cross-browser compatibility checking which is quite common today as it saves more time than testing each browser individually.

The major things to check and test for before publishing your website for public viewing are:

1) Validation of the HTML and CSS- make sure that the HTML and CSS is valid using validators.

2) Broken links- there are a number of tools available to find if there are any broken links on your website.

3) Flexibility of the appearance- this includes window and font sizes.

4) Speed of website and image loading- the speed even for the slowest modem should not be too slow. Although you might be using a broadband access, there are users who are using dial-up modem. You will lose these visitors if your website is too slow for them. Images may take longer time to load, but the text should load much quicker.



5) Browsers and compatibility- you should also check whether your website works with different browsers, including Windows, Mac or Linux platforms.

1) Internet Explorer is the most widely used browser and especially test for versions 5, 6, and 7

2) Firefox which is the second most widely used browser

There are methods available nowadays that allow one to check a website using multiple versions of Internet Explorer on a single machine.

Printed pages- print some of the pages and check whether the appearance is alright. Some websites provide a printer-friendly version of the pages and this made printing easier for the visitors.

Switch off some features to check whether it is still working on basic systems- this includes Javascript, plug-ins and images. You can still include them in, but with options for the visitors. Let them choose whether to wait for a video to download or only to read the texts.

The first impression of your website is very critical as this will determine whether the traffic will return again or it is only for once.
