Would you rather have $100,000 a year for the rest of your life or $1.3 million to spend right now?
That was the choice a Dade City man faced when he showed up at the Florida Lottery office in Tallahassee clutching a $20 Lucky For Life scratch-off ticket. It was Richard Wilson’s 25th birthday and he could have opted to receive $100,000 a year for the rest of his life.
Instead, he decided to take a lump sum of $1,307,231.
Wilson, who bought the ticket at a Citgo on State Road 471 in Webster, got so excited when he realized he had won the big prize that he jumped up and spilled a soft drink all over himself.
Not bothering to dry himself off, Wilson called his wife, Jennifer, who thought he might be pulling her leg.
“He’s constantly joking with me,” she told Lottery officials. “So I told him I would believe him only when I saw the ticket.”
Just for the record, the odds of wining the big prize in that game are 1 in 3.18 million. So far, three of the four top prizes available have been claimed.
So what which option would you have taken?
